MUD Election this Saturday, May 7

It’s Election Day once again here in The Woodlands—Saturday, May 7, 2022. Although this election may not have gathered as much broad interest as other recent elections have, the ballot items tomorrow are very important to the residents of The Woodlands.

On the ballot tomorrow are multiple MUD board positions. The MUD (Municipal Utility Districts) board members are responsible for establishing policy, setting water and sewage rates and proposing taxes as it relates to our water and sewage needs.

There are 11 MUD districts throughout the various villages of The Woodlands. And, although not each village has its own MUD board, every resident of The Woodlands is represented by a group of five board members serving on his/her respective MUD board. Some MUDs serve multiple villages and some villages are served by multiple MUDs. At first glance the dynamics may appear complicated, but the majority of The Woodlands’ water and sewage needs are serviced by one joint agency—Woodlands Water. This joint agency is responsible for the delivery of services as directed by the collective MUD boards. Each elected member of these boards represents the residents and are accountable to the residents who elect them.

We recently hosted Jim Stinson, General Manager of Woodlands Water on our SpeakerSeries   to discuss “The Truth about MUDs”. You can view this program at TownshipFuture SpeakerSeries The Truth about MUDs, to gain a better understanding of the operations of the MUDs and Woodlands Water.

Realizing how important the MUD board positions are is only half the story. The rest of the story is learning about the candidates running for those positions. With 49 candidates vying for approximately 20 spots, the competition is heated and, as with many elections, accusations and misstatements tend to be abundant. While this number may seem overwhelming, it’s important to understand that each resident is responsible to vote for two or three open spots on their respective boards in this election. The terms of the members of the MUD board are staggered so that only some of the board members are up for election at a time.

Using information gathered by the League of Women Voters and other sources, TownshipFuture has vetted candidates in each MUD board race and have made recommendations based on various factors. Please see below for our recommended candidates in each position (or click here to view on our website).

While some would expect residents to believe that just because a candidate is an incumbent, he or she needs to be removed.  This is simply not true—and not good practice. Many incumbents are hardworking residents whose sole goal is to better the community by being solid public servants. Many have years of service with invaluable experience and whose knowledge provides the continuity necessary to carry out plans and actions to bring about positive change within their respective MUDs. When vetting candidates, TownshipFuture took these as well as many other factors into consideration.

Your vote is important. Please be sure to review the candidates in your MUD. Use our Recommended List as a guide.

Remember to check your polling location for Saturday. Many will vote in your regular polling location, but some may be consolidated.

Thank you for your consideration and we appreciate your interest.

SpeakerSeries with Jim Stinson, April 20

Join TownshipFuture SpeakerSeries with our guest Jim Stinson, General Manager of Woodlands Water. Jim will discuss the history of the MUDs in The Woodlands, the governance structure of the MUDs and overall water delivery operations here in The Woodlands.

The MUDs (Municipal Utility District) operate throughout The Woodlands to provided water and sewage services to residents and businesses. Like many aspects of governance in our unique community, the MUDs operations and management can be somewhat confusing at first. But, like all aspects of governance here, once understood, residents get a sense of comfort in that the uniqueness provides many opportunities unavailable to other communities.

With the election of MUD directors being top of mind to many residents, TownshipFuture, standing true to our core principles to educate and advocate on issues important to The Woodlands residents, feel this timely presentation can give voters information upon which to form a solid basis to make a decision when going to the polls.

In recent weeks there have been many misstatements regarding MUD operations and MUD elections.  Armed with accurate and fact-based information, voters will be prepared to step into the polling booth to cast their ballots.

The MUD Election is May 7 at your polling place location.

Early voting is April 25-30, 8am to 5pm and again May 2-3, 7am to 7pm at early voting locations such as the Community Center on Lake Robbins Dr.

Join us Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at 7 pm via ZOOM using the link provided. NO prior registration is required. After the presentation attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions.
